In 1889, a colossal cloud burst inundated extreme West
Central West Virginia.	Rockport West Virginia received
the gully washer of a lifetime when nearly 20 inches of
rain reportedly overwhelmed the town in 2 HOURS and 10
MINUTES. Creeks in Wirt, Wood, and Jackson counties
definitely rose to the occasion, especially Tygart Creek,
which rose 22 FEET in 1 HOUR. The catastrophic flooding
of the Tygart, Slate, Tucker and Sandy Creeks claimed 20
lives as villages were swept away.
